I picked my big guy up from Camp Kesem yesterday. He had a blast!!!
Camp Kesem is a nationwide community, driven by passionate college student leaders, that supports children through and beyond their parent’s cancer. A program of Kesem, Camp Kesem operates over 70 free summer camps in 34 states for children ages 6 to 16 who have been touched by a parent’s cancer. This camping experience has a lasting impact on children by providing them a peer-support network that understands their unique needs, builds confidence and strengthens their communication skills. In 2015, Camp Kesem served over 5,000 children coast-to-coast - all funded by generous donations from individuals and corporate support.
Camp Kesem at University of Kentucky was founded in 2016 and supports children in the central Kentucky community by providing a week-long summer camp experience and year-long peer support.
Camp Kesem at University of Kentucky is operated by 20 student volunteers and serves 30 campers ages 6-16.
William was able to be part of the very first Camp Kesem at University of Kentucky!! He had SO MUCH FUN! He came home freckled and tanned and filthy, just like a kid should from camp! If he came home all clean, I'd be worried 😎
It was an entire week of fun for him. They painted and swam in a pond, did ziplines and rock climbing walls (for the kids who were brave enough - William said "not me" lol)... they sang songs and learned cheers and silly games... they made galaxy jars and went hiking and checked out bugs and birds and all sorts of things. I can't tell you everything they did! I'm excited to see pictures from the counselors and other campers!!
We will fundraise this year for Camp Kesem for next year! It's a GREAT program serving an underserved population - children who have parents with cancer - and the word needs to get out about this program. It's provided free to the families and the UK students fundraise to make it happen! Spread the word about this amazing program.
